APA Center for Organizational Excellence: The Awards

The Awards

The Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards are designed to recognize organizations for their efforts to foster employee health and well-being while enhancing organizational performance.

The Local Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award

Since 1999, Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards have been presented to organizations by state, provincial and territorial psychological associations with support from the American Psychological Association. The award program highlights a variety of workplaces, large and small, profit and non-profit, in diverse geographical settings.

Applicants are evaluated on their efforts in the following five areas:

  • Employee Involvement
  • Work-Life Balance
  • Employee Growth and Development
  • Health and Safety
  • Employee Recognition

The local award program has been extremely successful, with participation growing to 56 associations across the U.S. and Canada. Collectively, more than 500 organizations have been recognized at the state level.

APA’s National Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award

The American Psychological Association presented its first annual National Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards in March 2006.

Nominees for the National Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award are selected from the pool of previous state-level winners. Following a competitive evaluation and judging process, the top candidates are selected for national recognition by the American Psychological Association.

APA’s Best Practices Honors

In 2003, the American Psychological Association launched the Best Practices Honors, a national recognition that highlights the efforts of those state-level winners with particularly innovative programs and policies that contribute to a psychologically healthy work environment.

As with the National Award, nominees come from the pool of previous state-level winners and are selected through a competitive evaluation and judging process.
