How to Apply for the Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards

Applications for the 2020 Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards are now open. Apply by July 1, 2019. Click here to start an application.

After registering online and completing the initial application form, you will be contacted by a representative from the American Psychological Association’s Psychologically Healthy Workplace Program with more information about the application process.

Steps for Applying for the Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards

  1. Register online
  2. Complete the Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award (PHWA) application form, which asks you to check off the policies and practices your organization has in place and complete a short essay about your organization’s commitment to creating a psychologically healthy workplace.
  3. Complete the essay questionnaire. This is a series of short essays where you describe your workplace practices, as well as the benefits they have produced for employees and the organization. This may take a few hours and asks you to include data to support your claims (for example, employee turnover, participation rates, cost savings, performance improvements), so you may need to involve other people from your organization in the completion of this step.
  4. Obtain a link to our employee survey and forward it to your entire workforce, or a random sample of your employees. In general, at least 10 percent of your workforce must complete the survey, although adjustments are made for very large and very small organizations.
  5. Schedule a site visit for a team of psychologists to come to your organization, meet with employees and tour your facilities. This generally includes a meeting with senior leaders and a town hall or focus groups with employees.
  6. Following completion of the application process and awards selection, you will receive feedback, including a summary of results from the application form, essay questionnaire, employee survey and site visit.

APA selects the top organizations to receive a Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award and recognizes other applicants that meet established criteria with an Honors designation.

If you have questions about the process, please contact APA’s Psychologically Healthy Workplace Program at phwa@apa.org or (202) 336-5900.
